Les Sasvary was a friend, and whenever he was in the gym during a training session in the Los Angeles area, he always was able to find a way to help me and other young gymnasts become a little better. He had a way of teaching that gave me and all his students the confidence they needed to allow them go beyond where they thought they would ever be as gymnasts. Sasvary’s career in the development and direction of gymnastics, health and physical education programs in schools, colleges, organizations, and businesses has been highlighted by regional, national and international recognition. He was an outstanding high school gymnastics coach and served as a judge or Head Judge in numerous local, national, and international gymnastics competitions. Since retiring in 1994, he is now interested in utilizing his substantial experience in a new and challenging situation, one where strong direction, innovative thinking, and communication experience is required.
Education: Sasvary completed his diploma work at the University of Budapest, Hungary in 1954. By 1961, he had arrived in America, received citizenship by naturalization, and completed a B.A. at Youngstown State University. He went on to receive an M.A. at what titled California State University, Northridge, (1972). Later, Les took a variety of physical education and business courses at UCLA, (1974-1988). Gymnastics Training: Whenever and wherever gymnastic teaching, coaching, judging, or managing clinics or courses were held; it was not uncommon to find Les Sasvary actively participating. He was a participant in the Intercontinental Judges Course, Thonan La Bains, France, (1976), Moscow, USSR, (1980), and Seattle, Washington-USA, (1996). Suffice it to write that he attended and participated in numerous additional training for gymnastic judges in the U.S. and faraway places as well throughout his career. He was always on top of the newest in scoring, directing, and organizing of local, national, and international competitions. Teaching Experience: Teacher-Physical Education, Gymnastics Coach, Soccer Coach, and Health Education in Los Angeles City Unified School District. He coached at Muir HS, (1961-’65); Wilson HS, (1965-’66); and Monroe HS, (1966-’94). Service: Executive Director, National Gymnastics Judges Association, Inc. Coaching: During his time at Monroe High School, Sasvary’s teams won the L.A. City High School Championships a total of 10 times between 1969 and 1988. Honors/Awards: National High School Gymnastics Coach of the Year Award, (1976); Recipient, United States Gymnastics Federation Special Service Award, (1988); Recipient, Frank Cumiskey Gymnastics Judging Hall of Fame Award, (1974). Being a judge at these high-level competitions cannot help but bring to light that he was the center of various controversies and often criticized. Les had no special exemption from such problems. Several athletes were dissatisfied with some of his decisions or the way he influenced others to side with him in contested issues; nevertheless, he adapted well and prevailed to become a premier judge well known in the international community of gymnastics. Additional International Judging: Les Sasvary was an extremely active judge or Head Judge in important world competitions such as the Goodwill Games, the Chunichi Cup Championships, and a minimum of 25 dual and tri-competitions in which USA teams participated. All in all, Les Sasvary was a most prolific judge having judged in one capacity or another over 25 additional competitions too numerous to list independently. His retirement in 1994 will probably be just a change of career choices rather than a life of golf, fishing, and finding exotic places to travel. 1942-ben, az elemi iskola elvégzése után, felvételt nyertem az Egri Dobó István.
Gimnáziumba. A gimnázium torna csapatának aktív tagja voltam és számos középiskolás országos bajnokságon vettem részt.
1950-ben érettségiztem, majd a Testnevelési Főiskola ösztöndíjas hallgatója lettem. A főiskolán mint torna szakképzős a TF első osztályú csapattagjaként több első osztályú verseny megnyerése után meghívást kaptam a Mesterfokú Torna Kerethez.
1954-ben a tanári diploma megszerzése után a Bp., IX. ker. Mester utcai Általános Iskola tanáraként alkalmaztak.
1956. november 20-án Ausztriába menekültem, majd december 29-én az Egyesült Államokba vándoroltam.
1960-ban, mint versenyző, az Amerikai Egyesült Államok bajnokságán összetett versenyben tizenegyedik, szerenként több harmadik helyezést értem el. A versenyzési karrieremet 1960-ban egy súlyos sérülés miatt abbahagytam.
1961-ben az Egyesült Államokban megszereztem az első angol nyelvű diplomát, a Youngstown Egyetemen, Ohio államban. Los Angeles városában, mint középiskolai testnevelő tanár, tornaedző és labdarúgó edző működtem 33 évig. Az iskola az amerikai elnökről, James Monroe-ról volt elnevezve és ott, több mint 4200 diák tanult. Tornaedzői tevékenységem rendkívüli sikereket eredményezett. Csapataim a Los Angeles városi tornabajnokságot tíz alkalommal megnyerték. A résztvevő iskolák száma 50 volt.

1972-ben mester-vizsgás diplomámat a kaliforniai Northridge Egyetemen kaptam meg, majd a Müncheni Olimpiai Játékokon, mint pontozó bíró az Egyesült Államokat képviseltem. Az olimpia után, 1972-ben, kivándorlásom óta először látogattam haza Magyarországra.
1974-ben a Los Angeles-i Tornabírói Szövetség elnökének neveztek ki és egyidejűleg az Egyesült Államok Tornabírói Szövetség főtitkára lettem. Még ebben az évben egy rendkívüli megtiszteltetésben részesültem: beiktattak az Amerikai Tornabírók “Halhatatlanok” Csoportjában. (Hall of Fame)
1977-ben az Amerikai Tornabírói Szövetség elnöke lettem. Ez évben az Amerikai Torna Szövetség (U.S.G.F.) alelnöki pozícióját kaptam meg. Ugyanakkor az Amerikai Férfi Torna Sport Program Tervező Bizottságának elnöke lettem. Ezt a három fontos pozíciót az 1984-es Los Angeles-i Olimpiáig megtartottam. Büszkén és megelégedve mondhatom, hogy a férfi tornacsapat Los Angeles-i aranyérmének megszerzéséhez az én hét éves munkám nagyban hozzájárult.
1983-ban a Békési-Vigh: “Lólengés” című torna szakkönyvet, valamint egy évvel később a Nemzetközi Torna Szövetség (F.I.G.) szabálykönyvét fordítottam magyar nyelvről angolra.
1988-ban kiváló munkámért az Amerikai Torna Szövetség Nagydíjával jutalmaztak.
1991-ben az Amerikai Torna Sport “Halhatatlanok Csarnokába” lettem beiktatva. (Hall of Fame)
1994-ben, mint testnevelő tanár es edzo nyugdíjba mentem, de az amerikai és nemzetközi tornabírói vonalon továbbra is aktívan dolgoztam.
1996-ben Seattle városában megtartott Interkontinentális Bírói Kurzuson a Nemzetközi Torna Szövetség Technikai Asszisztens pozíciót kaptam meg, és a vizsgán 144 nemzetközi résztvevő közül az elsok között végeztem. Az Atlantai Olimpián a Nemzetközi Torna Szövetség Kongresszusán (FIG) az Amerikai Stratégia Bizottság tagja voltam, ahol aktívan dolgoztam az amerikai kandidátusok megválasztásának ügyében. (Mind a négy amerikai jelölt bekerült a FIG bizottságokba).
1997 decemberében a Magyar Köztársaság Belügyminisztériumának kitüntetésében részesültem. A magyar testnevelés és sportélet fejlesztése érdekében kifejtett eredményes munkámért a Magyar Sportért Kitüntető Cím elismerést kaptam.
1998-ban a 30 éves nemzetközi tornabírói működésem elismeréséért, a Nemzetközi Torna Szövetség (FIG) Dísz-Diplomájával jutalmaztak.
